The Art of Conscious Choice

Freedom is something I desired for years and often comes up as a desire when we are working with our coaching clients. When we drill down to see what freedom looks or feels like in the vision our client is holding we hear things like the capacity to be at choice or the freedom to choose.

The Encarta Dictionary defines freedom as an "ability to act freely; a state in which somebody is able to act and live as he or she chooses, without being subject to any, or to any undue, restraints and restrictions."

As I was reflecting on the idea of choice it occurred to me that there are several elements to the process of choosing. It also occurred to me that choice often serves different purposes in our lives. When we make a decision or choose we set into motion universal forces which support us in fulfillment of our desires. Often it is the energy and quality of the choice that determines our success and end result.

Most of us live in a reactive orientation. Unless we have cleared away what we are habituated to, our conditioning, habits and beliefs will have a role in our choices.

Robert Fritz, in his book, The Path of Least Resistance mentions 8 types of choice that occur from this orientation.

I will briefly summarize them here and you may recognize the ones you have in your repertoire. All of these ways of choosing are ineffective in supporting our desired results so it is important to become aware of them with the intention to shift to a way of choosing that supports the end result we desire.

Here are the eight:

1. Choice by limitation; this is the choice that is limited by the constructs of what you believe to be possible or reasonable. This type of choice decision will separate you from your dreams and desires and leave you in a compromised state; one of mediocrity. It is related to the habit of settling. It is also related to the fear of not being good enough.

2. Choice by indirectness; this is the choice that is related to the how something will happen and is process oriented. This is the choice that if I do this I will have that. This type of choosing is not focused on the desired result rather on how I will think I can make that desired result happen. The need to control is often at work with this type of choosing. This is often the result of living in the place I call do do land and measuring our value by what we are doing.

3. Choice by elimination; this is the land of irreconcilable differences. How many times have you heard the expression stated or said it yourself, "I had no choice?" The truth is you had no choice that you could see at the time or allowed yourself to see at the time. We often live in and are affected deeply by the fields of illusion we have created for the context of our lives. When we are in these we cannot see a way out.

4. Choice by default; this is the choice not to choose. In this space whatever we attract seems to be attracted without our active participation. This is where the energy of ignoring lives.

5. Conditioned choice; This type of choosing comes from imposing preconditions on our choices. We say, "If this then I will ______." We dictate the circumstances under which we agree to this choice. This type of choosing is often related to the fear of not being good enough and the resultant need to control things in our lives.

6. Choice by reaction; these choices are made as a way to reduce tension and the fear of separation or the loss of love of others. The idea here is to reduce conflict and discomfort. We often refer to this as caving in or going with the needs of others. This is definitely a way to avoid what we fear will happen. The choice is always one towards comfort and away from discomfort.

7. Choice by consensus; this is again related to the fear of separation. In order to avoid conflict and dissention we float the question of the moment to a group of stakeholders and align our decisions with the "will of the majority." This is a way to play safe and small. Choice by consensus will never serve the fulfillment of your intentions or purpose.

8. Choice by adverse possession; what Fritz is referring to here is the choice to choose from the place of a metaphysical notion about the nature of the universe. The idea here is that whatever you now have you have chosen. This leads to the conclusion that there is something outside of you in control and choosing the circumstances of your life for you. This creates a very passive response, the response of the victim. The truth is that the experiences you are now having in your life have been created by past decisions and actions in part and when we become conscious of our choices and conditioning and shift that which no longer serves us we can choose from a place of power and create exactly what we desire in our lives.

Our Rockit Consciousness Shifting programs address the conditioning and fears that influence our choices and shifts the energy of these to a place of neutrality. We are then able to enable, or enhance the complimentary states of being that support choice. This program is for you if freedom is something you desire in your life! New classes are forming now. Then there are ways of choosing. The ways we choose show where we see the power in a given situation. Can you see yourself in the above?

The idea is to consciously choose the results we wish to see manifested.

Have you made a choice to eat healthy foods? (Process oriented--this is about doing) or a choice to be healthy? (End result oriented--this is about being) Choosing a process limits the creative energy that is available to you for fulfillment of your desires.

Many of us choose to avoid something we do not want rather that to attract what we do want. When we choose something as an avoidance strategy we attract to us more of that which we want to avoid. The simple act of choosing to avoid the pain of what we do not want to experience creates enough conflict to attract more of the same. This occurs when we are in a high state of conflict. We want relief from the pressure we feel. This is where the fears of the unknown, living in a place of overwhelm and the habit of checking out live. Our choices here have us returning to the comfort of what is known.

So how do choose consciously?

There are several steps to this process, here are the basics:

1) Have a clear vision of what it is you desire/want to create/your end result

2) Formally choose this by saying, "I choose to have...." This is the process of intention and follows the visioning process. It is also the process of affirmation and it is the process of commitment and focus.

3) Know that this choice will now activate the organizing capacities of the universe or consciousness. This initiates the creative cycle.

4) Trust the process

5) Whenever deciding what actions to take to support fulfillment of your intention, ask yourself the following question:

How does the action I am taking support my vision and my desired result? If you cannot answer this question you might want to make a different choice!
